Botanical Name:  Panax Ginseng, Panax schinseng

Plant Family: Araliaceae

Common names: Asiatic Ginseng, Chinese Ginseng, Korean Ginseng, Red Korean Ginseng, Ren Shen, Wonder-of-the- World

Origin: Korean Ginseng is a perennial plant, which grows in the damp woodlands of Manchuria and is cultivated primarily in Korea, but is also native to China.

The name panax is derived from the Greek word panakos (panacea) meaning, ‘all healing’

What is Ginseng?
Ginseng is the dried root of one of several species of the Araliaceae family of herbs. The most commonly used type of Ginseng is Asian Ginseng, often sold as Panax, Chinese, or Korean Ginseng.
Closely related to Asian Ginseng is American Ginseng, which is sometimes preferred for its milder effects. Siberian Ginseng, also called eleuthero, isn’t as closely related to the other two and contains a series of unrelated compounds.

Eleuthero or Siberian Ginseng is considered weaker Ginseng in action and is a less expensive ingredient. Ginseng containing foods and dietary supplements are typically made from a powder or extract of Ginseng root. The main active components of Panax Ginseng are ginsenosides, which have been shown to have a variety of beneficial effects, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer effects. Results of clinical research studies demonstrate that Panax Ginseng may improve psychologic function, immune function, and conditions associated with diabetes.
COMPOSITION OF GINSENG
Ginseng root contains at least 29 active ingredients. Korean Ginseng contains more than 25 saponin triterpenoid glycosides called Ginsenosides. Of them, the Rb and Rg ginsenosides are perhaps the most significant. Rb-1 has a calming effect on the body (Yin qualities), helping it manage stress, while Rg-1 has a stimulating effect (Yang qualities), giving the body energy. The amounts and types of these phyto-chemicals that are found in Ginseng depend on the type of plant and its origin.
Korean ginseng contain Lignans (sesamine, eleutheroside D [di-beta-D-glycoside of syringaresinol]), Polysaccharides (eleutherane A-G & eleutheroside C [ethyl-alpha-D-galactoside]), Triterpene saponins (eleutheroside I, K, L, and M), Steroid glycosides (eleutheroside A [glycoside of daucosterol]), Hydroxycoumarins (isofraxidin), Phenylacrylic acid derivatives (eleutheroside B [glycoside of syringin]), Minerals (Ca, P, K, Mg, Na, Al, Ba, Fe, Sr, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Cr). All of the above have a significant impact on your overall total wellness.

APPLICATIONS

Adaptagen
Ginseng has the ability to help maintain the function of the organs in the body that help to keep us healthy! That is why scientists have classified this herb as an adaptagen; it helps the body to ‘adapt’ to situations that would otherwise drain it of its strength and vitality. Ginseng has been shown to reduce the intensity of the body’s response to stresses. Ginseng is the first bioactive compound to be termed “adaptogenic”, which indicates a balancing effect to restore or counter the effects of stress.

Ginseng increases mental and physical efficiency and resistance to stress and disease. Ginseng protects the body against radiation and chemical toxins.

Mental performance

Several studies report that ginseng can modestly improve thinking or learning at daily doses between 200 and 400 milligrams of standardized extract, taken by mouth daily for up to 12 weeks. Mental performance has been assessed using standardized measurements of reaction time, concentration, learning, math, and logic. Benefits have been seen both in healthy young people and in older ill patients. Good effects have also been reported for the combination use of ginseng with Ginkgo biloba. Individuals who use ginseng often report that they feel more alert. It improves memory and symptoms of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.
Diabetes

Several human studies report that ginseng may lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, both at fasting states and after eating. It normalizes glucose levels after meals in diabetics.

It improves glycemia in Type II diabetics by reducing free fatty acid (FFA) availability and improving insulin sensitivity

Energy tonic / Physical Endurance

Ginseng is widely used all over the world to improve overall energy and vitality, particularly when people use Ginseng during times of fatigue or stress. Ginseng is commonly used by athletes to improve stamina.
Ginseng protects the body against stress, radiation and chemical toxins, and improves and promotes physical stamina by preventing the depletion of stress-fighting hormones in the adrenal glands. Over-training in athletics is harmful to athletic gains and the body in general, with immune suppression a common result of going too far, too fast. Ginseng has been shown to be supportive in restoring muscle glycogen (carbohydrate) and high energy phosphate compounds to normal levels

 Alcohol Intoxication
Asian ginseng could be helpful in treating alcohol intoxication. The herb may accomplish this by speeding up the metabolism (break down) of alcohol and, thus, allowing it to clear more quickly from the body. Or, as animal research suggests, ginseng may reduce the absorption of alcohol from the stomach.

 Alzheimer’s Disease
Individual reports and animal studies indicate that either American ginseng or Asian ginseng may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and improve memory and behavior. Studies of large groups of people are needed to best understand this possible use of ginseng.

Cancer
A study comparing groups of people over time suggests that regular intake of ginseng may reduce one’s chances of getting various types of cancer, especially lung, liver, stomach, pancreatic and ovarian. In this particular study, this benefit was not observed for breast, cervical, or bladder cancers. However, a test tube study suggests that American ginseng may enhance the effects of medications used to treat breast cancer. And, preliminary results suggest that ginseng may improve treatment of colon cancer in animals. A greater number of well-designed studies including, ultimately, large numbers of people are needed before conclusions can be drawn about whether ginseng offers some protection from cancer or not.

Cardiovascular Health
Asian ginseng in particular may decrease endothelial cell dysfunction. Endothelial cells line the inside of blood vessels. When these cells are disturbed, referred to as dysfunction, they can cause blockage of blood flow in a variety of ways. This disturbance or disruption may even lead to heart attack or stroke. The potential for ginseng to quiet down the blood vessels may prove to be protective against heart and other forms of cardiovascular disease.

Ginseng may also raise HDL (the good cholesterol), while reducing total cholesterol levels.

Finally, there is some controversy about whether, under certain circumstances, ginseng may help improve blood pressure. Ginseng is generally considered to be a substance to avoid if you have hypertension because it can raise blood pressure. In a couple of studies, however, of red Korean (Asian) ginseng, high doses of this herb actually lowered blood pressure. Some feel that the usual doses of ginseng may increase blood pressure while high doses may have the opposite effect of decreasing blood pressure. Much more information is needed in this area before a conclusion can be drawn. And, if you have high blood pressure or heart disease, it is not safe to try ginseng on your own, without specific instructions from a knowledgeable clinician.

Ginseng is known to normalize blood pressure, increase blood circulation and aid in the prevention of heart disease

Depression
Because of its ability to help resist or reduce stress, some herbal specialists may consider ginseng as part of the treatment for depression.

 Fertility/Sexual Performance
Ginseng is widely believed to be capable of enhancing sexual performance. It increases estrogen levels in women and normalizes menstruation. It also eases childbirth

In men Panax species of ginseng have increased sperm production, sexual activity, and sexual performance. A study of 46 men has also shown an increase in sperm count as well as motility. Combination with Ginkgo is effective.

Immune System Enhancement
Ginseng is believed to enhance the immune system, which could, in theory, help the body fight off infection and disease. It increases natural killer cell activity and stimulates the production of interferon found in the immune system. This, in turn, stimulates the body’s own defense systems that fight diseases and allergies.

In one study, in fact, giving people ginseng before getting the flu-vaccine did boost their immune response to the vaccine compared to those who received a placebo.

 Menopausal Symptoms
Ginseng may have estrogen-like activity. Two well-designed studies evaluating red Korean (Asian) ginseng suggest that this herb may relieve some of the symptoms of menopause, improving mood (particularly feelings of depression), balancing hormones, regulating hot flushes, rejuvenating the system giving a sense of well being.

 Mood Enhancement
On the other hand, for those who report that ginseng elevates their mood, the science thus far does not support that this herb changes your mood if you are otherwise healthy.

 Respiratory Disease
In patients with severe chronic respiratory disease (such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis), daily treatment with ginseng improved respiratory function, as evidenced by increased endurance in walking.

 Stress
Ginseng has long been valued for its ability to help the body deal with stress. A study of 501 men and women living in Mexico City found significant improvements in quality of life measures (energy, sleep, sex life, personal satisfaction, well-being) in those taking ginseng.
