Fibroids, also called uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, refer to tumors that are not in the uterus cancerous or to protrusions that develop in the inner and outer muscle wall of the uterus. Uterine fibroids can also develop in the cervix.  They are usually caused by strogen dominance (excess strogen). This hormone stimulates their growth and its deficiency atrophies them. These round, firm tumors made of smooth muscle and connective tissue can form individually or in groups. They are usually small, but can grow to the size of an orange or grapefruit. The symptoms of uterine fibroids vary considerably. Almost half of women with fibroids are unaware of it while others experience symptoms such as heavy bleeding, abdominal bloating, menstrual cramps, irregular periods, anemia, and fatigue, pain during sex, and small bloody discharge between periods, constipation and increased urination.

Reduction of the inflammatory syndrome. Serrapeptase, or Serratia peptidase, has been used for more than 30 years in Europe and Asia to reduce pain, inflammation and excessive mucus secretion. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, serrapeptase has shown interest in clinical studies in the treatment of patients suffering from chronic sinusitis. In this disease, mucus from the nasal cavity of patients is thickened and secreted in abundance. This thickening prevents the mucus from being expelled frequently enough. Japanese researchers evaluated the effects of serrapeptase (30 mg daily for 4 weeks) on the elasticity and viscosity of nasal mucus in adult patients with chronic sinusitis. Results showed that serrapeptase reduces the viscosity of mucus, thus improving the elimination of bronchopulmonary secretions.

Other clinical trials support the ability of serrapeptase to relieve problems associated with chronic sinusitis. In one study, 140 patients with chronic or acute pathologies of the ear, nose or throat were evaluated with placebo or serrapeptase. Patients taking serrapeptase experienced a significant reduction in pain severity, quantity and purulence of secretions, difficulty swallowing, dysphonia and nasal obstruction, anosmia and body temperature after 3 or 4 days and at the end of treatment.  Patients with laryngitis, catarrhal rhinopharyngitis or sinusitis treated with serrapeptase experienced significant and rapid improvement in their symptoms after 3 to 4 days. Adjuvant treatment of bacterial infection.  As a potent agent on its own, serrapeptase, when added to antibiotics, delivers increased concentrations of the antimicrobial agent to the site of infection.  Bacteria often undergo a process, called biofilm formation that leads to resistance to antimicrobial agents. To try to prevent this bacterial immunity, researchers have been experimenting with different ways to prevent the bacteria from becoming wrapped in the biofilm; the solution may well be serrapeptase. Antibiotic susceptibility tests show that serrapeptase significantly stimulates the activity of the antibiotic ofloxacin and inhibits biofilm formation. Another randomized, double-blind study evaluated the effects of administering the antibiotic cephalexin in combination with serrapeptase or placebo in 93 patients with perennial or chronic rhinitis. Patients treated with serrapeptase experienced significant improvements in rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction and coryza.

Researchers have observed impressive results in the treatment of infection in lung cancer patients undergoing thoracotomy.
