Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the Serratia bacterium that lives in the gut of the silkworm. This enzyme has the ability to dissolve lifeless tissue while exerting no detrimental action on the host’s living cells. Serrapeptase dissolves the protective cocoon of the silkworm and allows it to emerge and take flight. When this enzyme has been isolated, it has been shown to act as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever in a manner quite similar to the action of aspirine, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Clinical studies indicate that serrapeptase induces fibrinolytic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-dematous activity in many patients’ tissues, and that its anti-inflammatory effects are superior to those of other proteolytic enzymes. In Germany and a number of other European countries, serrapeptase is recognized as a standard treatment for inflammation and traumatic swelling.

Serrapeptase was discovered 30 years ago through a study leading to a discovery about the amazing activities of silkworms. It was discovered that silkworms come out of their cocoon, digesting it within seconds.  Researchers set out to discover how such weak creatures could overcome their protective cocoon, so robust against wind, rain, and predatory birds, so quickly and easily. After some time, the researchers discovered that silkworms made an enzyme and that when they coated the cocoon with it, this enzyme dissolved it almost instantly.  This intrigued them to no end! So they immediately began to grow the enzyme in the laboratory and then experiment with it orally. The results were spectacular and beyond all expectations.
